The future of Audi begins on the track at Le Mans!
Audi is consistently pushing the envelope when it comes to design and performance. Last year, Audi was the first team to win using hybrid technology. Before that? The first team to win using TDI® clean diesel technology—for six consecutive years. This year, Audi is out to do it again. Winning is in our heritage. And the R18 e-tron® quattro® is poised to make history again.

Camouflaged Jaguar F-Type hints towards a future coupe model!
Jaguar's F-Type convertible is on fire right now. Sales are soaring and half of the first year's production is already sold. It's safe to say the sports car is meeting or exceeding Jaguar expectations.
Coming with a trio of supercharged engine choices -- 340 hp, 380 hp and 495 hp respectively -- these cars are no slowpokes (although they are on the heavy side, tipping the scales northward of 3,500 pounds).
With coupe prototypes being consistently seen on the streets of Europe and no official denial from Jaguar, we expect to hear of an official release very soon.
Expect the same engine choices to be available for the coupe and hope that Jaguar decides to stick a manual transmission in this thing.
As always, stay tuned for more information regarding the Jag.

Porsche 911 gracefully races into middle age!
"Look daddy, it's a Porsche," my daughter yelled from the backseat one day last summer as we rolled down the autobahn.
It's a familiar enough expression, and we all dutifully looked out the window to admire the iconic, rear-engine car roll past. What surprised me, however, was that the information came from my six-year-old daughter, who is oblivious to other car brands.
Many may be surprised to learn that the German beauty, the Porsche 911, is turning 50 this year, giving children and adults alike the chance to celebrate the car's enduring appeal.
Stuttgart's Porsche Museum is throwing a summer-long birthday party with a new exhibition entitled "50 Years of the Porsche 911." Everyone is invited to join in the party, and 911 owners and those born in 1963 get in free.
The anniversary exhibition, the biggest new addition to the museum since its opening in 2009, promises to draw crowds of 911 fans from across the globe.
Housed in an elegantly designed building in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, the museum provides informative displays detailing Porsche's past and present, with at least 80 exhibits on display. The must-sees include the world-famous 356, the 911, 550 and 917, as well as technical displays highlighting the innovative know-how of founder Professor Ferdinand Porsche from the early 1900s.
Prof. Porsche designed the first production-line hybrid car with an electric engine, for example, debuting it to much acclaim at the Paris World Fair in 1900. This marked the first historical instance of Porsche proving to be ahead of its time, launching the brand's long legacy in innovative motoring.
Other museum highlights include several rally cars, films about the production process, sound chambers where you can feel and hear the power of the Porsche engines, engine displays, and a restaurant with seated viewing of a workshop where visitors can watch expert mechanics fine tune various models.
For the anniversary exhibition, visitors get the added treats of seeing a variety of never- before-displayed automobiles and exhibits. To mark the birthday, Porsche engineers have created a stunning replica of the very first 911 (then called the 901) to be shown at the International Motor Show in Frankfurt in 1963. They will also learn how Ferry Porsche's son came up with the famous design – to meet the demands for a 2+2 seat, rear-engine sports car that could carry a golf bag in the boot – which has helped cement the brand in motoring history.
In all, the 911 anniversary exhibition gives visitors a chance to see more than 40 different 911 versions, including limited edition models, race cars and even prototypes. Mostly, however, it's a chance to celebrate the classic style and appeal of the 911, which speaks to children and adults alike.
Unlike other exclusive sports cars, the Porsche 911 draws admirers from all walks of life and every social scale. "For most people, it's the dream car," said Astrid Böttinger from the museum's press office.
The cars on display offer a visual history of the 911's evolution, from its early heyday through its redesigns and innovative changes. The models enable visitors to see the subtle yet technically impressive changes up close, including the innovative Targa roll bar introduced in 1965, the bellows-style bumpers of the 1970s, the 911 Turbo with rear spoiler, first introduced in 1974, up through to the ultra-streamlined models of the 2000s and today.
One wall has been dedicated to the silhouettes of all of the varieties of 911 ever produced, from 1963 forward, and what strikes the eye is how little the design has changed, despite seven generations and various overhauls.
Porsche's engineers strive, said Böttinger, to retain the integrity of the beloved design. "They can't touch the basics," she explained, "because our customers are purists. They're passionate about the 911's design." In other words, fans love the look of the 911 – they always have and always will.
The low-slung bonnet and gentle curves – which have always enabled the Porsche 911 to look both classic and modern at the same time – make the car recognizable from any angle. This is why even my American daughter, age six, can knowingly and admiringly spot a Porsche.
The fact that the 911 is loved by young and old alike bodes well for the brand's next 50 years as well. "Perhaps, one day the 911 will fly," Böttinger said.
The final museum exhibit is of a breathtaking 50th edition model, a 911 Coupé capable of 300 kliometres per hour. Only 1,963 of these cars will be made.
For those wanting to leave their own mark on Porsche's history, a creativity wall has been set up at the end of the tour where visitors can draw their own version of ahttp://checkered-flag.porschedealer.com/ the Porsche 911 silhouette.

New Audi R18 E-tron Quattro Long-Tail To Undergo Testing!
The third entry — the Audi R18 E-tron Quattro Le Mans prototype — will have an extended rear body section, an enhancement tailored to the high-speed Circuit de la Sarthe, site of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The long-tail will give drivers and engineers a chance to compare the two versions in competition before the Le Mans classic June 22-23.
Audi says the aero package has been "optimized for the high-speed Le Mans track."
The long-tail design has appeared on other endurance racers.
Loïc Duval, Tom Kristensen and Allan McNish, who won the WEC opener at Silverstone April 14, will drive one of the conventional entries and Marcel Fässler, André Lotterer and Benoît Tréluyer, who won last year's WEC title, will drive the other.
The long-tail car will be piloted by Marc Gené, Lucas di Grassi and Oliver Jarvis.
The performance of the conventional cars compared to the low-downforce model will be compared on their performance in different sectors of the 4.352-mile Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps to add to the expansive data already in possession of the team for the Le Mans race.
Le Mans is the primary goal of all Le Mans Prototype teams, but it has been all but exclusive property of Audi, which has won the last three in a row and 11 out of the last 13.
"As always, Audi will be using the race at Spa as a 'dress rehearsal' for the Le Mans 24 Hours in June," said Dr. Wolfgang Ulrich, head of Audi Motorsport.
Only two challengers have interrupted Audi's streak at Le Mans. Bentley won in 2003 and Peugeot got a victory in 2009. Toyota is the latest to take aim at knocking Audi off the top of the podium.
"We can expect our opponent Toyota to compete with the latest technological update," said Ralf Jüttner, technical director for Audi Sport Team Joest.
Edmunds says: Even with an incredible record like the one Audi has amassed at Le Mans, nothing can be taken for granted.

Monday Maintenance Tip: How often does Audi brake fluid need to be changed?
We recommend flushing the brake fluid system about every 30,000 miles or three years. Changing Audi brake fluid is recommended and easiest when performing Audi brake rotor or pad service. Most Audi's came from the factory with a light amber colored brake fluid. If your original Audi brake fluid has turned a dark amber color it can be changed using the DOT 4 brake fluid above.
Note: If your Audi brake fluid was filled with a lower grade brake fluid, it needs to be changed sooner. This is because lower wet boiling point brake fluids accumulate more moisture (see the paragraph below for the dangers of moisture in the brake fluid).

Audi mulls a more practival RS5 – and a minvan?
Audi is quickly climbing the luxury ladder, becoming the second best-selling luxury automaker in the world. Despite its heavy-hitting lineup, it still has a few models missing, including a shooting brake (a type of two-door wagon) and a minivan.
What might it look like? Car mad digital artist Garrett Bradford rendered these two images based on current sedan designs.
Audi recently unveiled the new RS 5, which is based upon the same platform as the RS 4, which itself has a wagon variant. So it stands to reason that the automaker has the chassis architecture at hand to make an RS 5 shooting brake.
As we imagine it, Audi would do away with the virtually ancient normally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 in the current RS 5 and replace it with its latest TFSI 4.0-liter V8, which produces 520 horsepower and 479 pound-feet of torque.
Admittedly, wagons don’t sell very well here in the States so it might be a bit of a push. Recently, Audi unveiled its RS 6 Avant and excluded the U.S. from its sales markets. We hope they’d make an exception for an RS 5 shooting brake.
Where an Audi minivan might actually sell quite well globally, a limited-run RS 5 shooting brake could garner the German brand with more notoriety, which bolsters sales of its lower-end vehicles.

Porsche Boosts Deliveries in the First Quarter by 21 Percent!
The German sports cars from Zuffenhausen and Leipzig are very coveted in 2013 again: In the first three months, Porsche delivered 37,009 vehicles to customers the world over – an increase of 21.1 percent compared to the same period of the prior year. In March, the sports car manufacturer achieved over 14,000 deliveries for the first time in its company history.
“The success of the first quarter encourages us to implement our Strategy 2018 systematically,” said Bernhard Maier, Member of the Executive Board Sales and Marketing of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG. “Our responses to the uncertainties on the market are products that induce great enthusiasm in customers, such as the new Panamera as well as a highly motivated workforce.”
Porsche registered a heightened customer interest in the rear-engine and mid-engine models on the Chinese market: one third more Boxster, Cayman and 911 vehicles were delivered in the first quarter of 2013. All in all, Porsche sold 8,844 cars in China during this period – an increase by one fourth in comparison to the first quarter of 2012. At the end of the month, the new generation of the Panamera – with which Porsche launches the first plug-in hybrid worldwide in the luxury class – will have its world premiere at the Auto China in Shanghai, which opens on April 21, 2013.
The demand for the 911 continues unabated: from January through March, Porsche delivered 7,230 models of the sports car icon – an increase of 18.6 percent compared to the first three months of the previous year. The Cayenne also continued to expand its market position: Around 20,000 vehicles of the sporty SUV have been handed over to customers so far this year.

N.Y. Auto Show: Jaguar unleashes pair of quick cats!
Jaguar got an early start on the 2013 New York Auto Show by announcing Tuesday that two extra-quick cats will be joining its growing stable.
The first is the track-oriented XKR-S GT. Only 25 of these two-door coupes will be coming to the U.S., and though they're designed for track use, all will be street-legal.
The GT's powertrain is largely unchanged from the XKR-S that debuted at the 2011 New York show: a supercharged 5.0-liter V-8 makes 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. This power is pushed to the rear wheels via a six-speed automatic transmission and an active rear differential.
Where the GT differs from its more demure -- relatively speaking -- brother is in the suspension, steering and aerodynamic changes. The tweaks help the GT hit zero-60 mph in 3.9 seconds, which is .3 seconds faster than the non-GT model.
"[The GT] has been developed in the wind tunnel and on the racetrack with the sole aim of creating as much high-speed stability and downforce as possible," said Ian Callum, director of design for Jaguar. "Nothing has been styled for the sake of it." In order to increase downforce -- which is everyone's friend on the track -- the GT adds items such as a large carbon fiber rear wing, front splitter, rear diffuser, and an aluminum undertray. Suspension changes include a wider front track and height-adjustable adaptive dampers with stiffer spring rates. The steering system is revised, giving drivers a quicker steering ratio. Weight is kept to a minimum through the use of aluminum for the entire body structure. The GT also gets the first application of carbon-ceramic brakes on a production Jaguar. The XKR-S GT and the non-GT version -- and is scheduled to arrive in dealerships in August.
The GT's New York debut was complemented by the more subdued, yet equally powerful, XJR sedan. The full-size XKR draws 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque from a familiar source: a supercharged 5.0-liter V-8. This power is pushed to the rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission and an active differential. The XJR gets minor body tweaks to set it apart from lesser XJs, as well as an updated suspension. The car will come in regular or extra-long versions, respectively.

Tuesday Tip: When temperatures affect tire inflation!
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE
When outside temperatures drop or soar, tires tend to lose pressure. A drop of 10 degrees, in fact, will decrease a tire’s air pressure by one or two pounds. Tires can lose even more air in hot weather. Under-inflated tires can result in accelerated wear and poor driving performance. If you live in a place where temperatures vary a lot, check your tire pressure often and add air as needed.

Audi unveils A3 Sportback G-Tron with bi-fuel power, 808-mile range!
Audi is taking a large step towards sustainable mobility with the A3 Sportback g-tron. The compact five-door car, due to make its debut at the end of the year, is powered by the CO2-neutral fuel Audi e-gas. The fuel will be produced in the power-to-gas plant in Werlte, Germany. This new car innovatively combines ecological balance, economy and high-tech solutions.
The Audi A3 Sportback g-tron comes with the full gamut of Audi's technology expertise – from ultra-lightweight technology, and infotainment, to driver assistance systems. But first and foremost it showcases state-of-the-art CNG drive technology, starting with the fuel storage. Its two tanks under the luggage compartment floor can each hold seven kilograms (15.43 lb) of CNG at a maximum 200 bar pressure. In tune with the ultra-lightweight construction concept, each tank weighs 27 kilograms (59.52 lb) less than its conventional counterpart. The tanks consist of a new type of matrix. The inner layer consists of gas-impermeable polyamide polymer, while a second layer of carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) gives the tank its extremely high strength; a third layer of glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) provides rugged protection against damage from the outside. High-strength epoxy resin is used to bind the fiber reinforced materials. A second highlight of the Audi A3 Sportback g-tron is its electronic gas pressure regulator. This compact and lightweight component reduces the high pressure of the gas flowing from the cylinders down to around five to nine bar in two stages. It ensures that the right pressure is always present in the gas rail and at the injector valves – low pressure for efficient driving in the lower speed range, and higher when the driver calls for more power and torque. If the pressure in the tank drops below ten bar, the engine management system automatically switches over to gasoline operation. The Audi A3 Sportback g-tron is fully bivalent, i.e. its performance figures are identical in CNG and gasoline modes. CNG provides a range – based on standard fuel consumption – of around 400 km (248.55 miles), with gasoline providing another 900 km (559.23 miles) if necessary; the total range is approximately on a par with an Audi TDI. Two displays in the instrument cluster provide the driver with up-to-date information on the fuel level in each of the tanks. The driver information system also displays the current fuel consumption based on the particular operating mode. The two filler necks are placed under a common fuel flap. After refueling, and whenever it is very cold, the engine is started with gasoline initially, then it is switched over to natural gas as quickly as possible. The engine is based on the new 1.4 TFSI. Key modifications relate to the cylinder head, turbocharging, injection system, and the catalytic converter. Developing 81 kW (110 hp) and 200 Nm of torque, the Audi A3 Sportback g-tron has a top speed of 190 km/h (118.06 mph), with 0 to 100 km/h (0 - 62.14 mph) taking eleven seconds. The five-door car consumes on average less than 3.5 kilograms per 100 km of CNG or Audi e-gas – the fuel that is generated from eco-electricity in the Audi e-gas project. CO2 tailpipe emissions are less than 95 grams per km (152.89 g/mile) in gas mode. The greenhouse gas balance is even more attractive in a well-to-wheel analysis that accounts for all factors from the fuel source to the car's wheels. When the A3 Sportback g-tron is powered by Audi e-gas, no more CO2 is released than was chemically input in its production beforehand – creating a closed loop. When the energy required to build the e-gas facility and wind power generators is included in a comprehensive analysis, CO2 emissions are still less than 30 grams per km (48.28 g/mile). Buyers of the Audi A3 Sportback g-tron will presumably obtain the e-gas at the public CNG refueling stations via an ecological accounting method, similar to the method currently in existence for obtaining eco-electricity. With the e-gas project, Audi is the first automobile manufacturer to develop an entire chain of sustainable energy carriers. The start of the chain has electricity produced from renewable energy sources; the end products are hydrogen and the synthetic Audi e-gas. Construction of the world's first industrial plant to produce synthetic methane (e-gas) from CO2 and renewable electricity is almost complete in Werlte (Emsland district of Lower Saxony), Germany. The Audi e-gas plant uses the renewable electricity in the first stage for electrolysis – splitting water into oxygen and hydrogen (Audi e-hydrogen), which could one day power fuel-cell vehicles. Because there is not yet a widespread hydrogen infrastructure, however, the hydrogen is then reacted with CO2 in a methanation plant to produce renewable synthetic methane, or Audi e-gas. Chemically speaking, this e-gas is identical to fossil-based natural gas. As such, it can be distributed to CNG stations via the natural-gas network. Thanks to the power-to-gas process, the electricity grid and gas network are being linked bidirectionally for the first time. Until now while you could generate electricity from gas, the reverse was not possible. The Audi e-gas plant therefore paves the way for tapping into the natural-gas network with its huge capacity as a storage and transport system for hitherto excess electricity capacity. The CO2 used in Audi's e-gas plant is a waste product from a nearby biogas plant, operated by power utility EWE. The CO2, which would otherwise pollute the atmosphere, is chemically bonded into the fuel at the Audi e-gas plant. The e-gas plant will annually produce about 1,000 metric tons of e-gas and will chemically bind some 2,800 metric tons of CO2. This corresponds roughly to the amount of CO2 that 224,000 beech trees absorb in a year. The CO2-neutral e-gas from Werlte will power 1,500 new Audi A3 Sportback g-tron vehicles 15,000 kilometers (9,320.57 miles) every year. The power industry can also benefit from Audi's e-gas project, as it addresses the nagging challenge of how to store large quantities of renewable electricity produced from wind turbines and photovoltaic systems efficiently and irrespective of location. The electricity-gas cogeneration technology could significantly foster the expansion of renewable energies.Courtesy of Autoblog.com

The 2014 Audi RS 5 Cabriolet raises the volume on the already impressive A5 and S5 convertibles.
Audi has turned its A, S, and RS lineups into the automotive equivalent of new iPhone introductions: Every year, you can expect a little more from a new model. For the 2014 Audi RS 5, this means a new soft-top convertible model that joins the existing coupe.
Like the coupe, the RS 5 convertible features a 4.2-liter V8 engine making 450 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. That power is transferred to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission.
Audi says the RS 5 Cabriolet will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, about a half-second slower than the coupe. That's not bad, considering that the convertible weighs nearly 400 pounds more than the coupe. Audi claims fuel economy of 16 mpg city/22 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined.
The convertible doesn't require much practical sacrifice either. Its soft top opens in 15 seconds and closes in 17 seconds at speeds of up to 30 mph. The 50/50 split-folding rear seats offer a trunk pass-through, and with 11.3 cubic feet of trunk volume with the top down, the convertible only gives up about 1 cubic foot to the coupe (and actually offers more -- 13.4 cubes -- with the top raised). Outside, the RS 5 uses adaptive xenon headlights with surrounding LED light strips and black honeycomb grilles for a purposeful stance and style.
The 2014 Audi RS 5 Cabriolet goes on sale this spring. Audi hasn't announced pricing.

Audi Investing $16.5b in New Vehicles and Production Plants
Audi will invest $16.5 billion over the next four years as it aggressively pursues growth in the face of a challenging global economic climate.
The ambitious capital expenditure program will see the prestige German manufacturer focus on the development of new vehicles and technologies as well as the completion of three new manufacturing plants.
Nearly $10 billion will be invested into existing hubs in Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm as Audi modernises and expands its showroom line-up and intensifies its efforts in the areas of electric mobility and lightweight design and construction.
Audi’s expansion plans should see the completion of the manufacturing site in Gyor, Hungary, later this year, followed by assembly lines in Foshan, China, in early 2014 and San Jose Chiapa, Mexico by 2016.
Audi AG chief financial officer Axel Strotbek said investment in international production facilities was fundamental to the brand’s goal of becoming the world’s top-selling premium vehicle brand and boosting its sales to more than two million per year by 2020.
“The expansion of our global manufacturing infrastructure will help us to continue growing,” Strotbek said. “We will keep investing large sums to pursue our growth strategy.”
